Are you there?

People always tell you you'll see who your true friends are when you go through something. What about when some of your family forgets about you too?

When I initially got sick, there were certain people I was so certain that would be by my side. I was certain they'd check in on me at least once a week or at least stop by because at that point I was basically on bed rest. I thought maybe they'd call to see how I was doing. But the people I expected to do those things didn't. At first I took it personally. Feeling almost as if most people were ignoring me on purpose. I had to realize only my world had stopped. Not theirs. They weren't the ones in so much pain they couldn't get out of bed, it wasn't them that was too ashamed to be seen out in public because the physical changes. It was ME. My life was on pause and everyone else around me was still in full affect. But does that give people the right to forget about you? To just stop checking in on you ?

I had to learn to stop expecting things from people because people technically don't owe me anything. I had to realize people don't treat people the way they would want to be treated.

Once I realized this, God began to bring the people that were meant to be in my life, into my life. Suddenly I had a whole new circle of positive vibes. Some of those people being people I went to school with for years and never really was friends with , but I am now friends with because they would see I was in the hospital, and just started visiting, writing me letters, sending gifts; all the while the people I expected to do those very things weren't there.

Ive leared that if you are not convenient for people anymore, they don't really like to deal with you. But I  had to stop focusing on those people. I had to start focusing and appreciating the people that were there for me. Putting all my energy into the people that weren't, was giving them too much power and only making me more miserable. I also had to realize me talking about the people not there for me to the people who are is disheartening to them. I had to start recognizing them, instead of recognizing the people not there and the anger that came behind it.

If you care about someone and you know they're going through something, let them know you care. It doesn't have to be a four page letter, you don't have to even send a physical gift. Just simply acknowledging a person could make their day. That is if your truly there...
